Festival related to the birth of Lord Ganesh celebrates in the bright half of Bhadrapad Shukla (i.e. in the month of August or September). 10 days Ganesh festival is celebrated all over India from Ganesh Chaturthi (birth date of lord Ganesh) up to Anant Chaturdashi (the final day of his immersion).

Actually, this festival was started by the Father of Indian Unrest Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who mobilised people through public Ganesh Utsav which was until then confined to the homes of the people and palaces of Maharajas. The Hindus came together for the festival, which became a source of political awakening against the British regime.

In several states of India, especially in the state of Maharashtra the Ganesh idols are made of clay. People purchase these idols and brought home with slogan of `Ganapati Bappa Moriya, Mangal Murti Moriya` on the previous day i.e. on Ganesh Chaturthi, which is the day of Hartalik too when Indian women’s keep fast and invoke the blessings of goddess Parvati, the mother of Lord Ganesh.

From Ganesh Chaturthi till Anant Chaturdashi, people performing Puja and enjoy the festival by organizing cultural programs at different levels.

On the day of immersion, after performing Puja, the Ganesh idol is taken out in a procession by dance and songs. On Anant Chaturdashi day the sea fronts, river fronts, lake fronts etc. are totally packed with surging mass of humanity as the idols of Ganesh are carried towards their watery rest with slogan of Ganapati Bappa Moriya, Pudhachya varshi lavkar ya which means Lord Ganesh, return early next year.
